Libre Graphics

Libre Graphics is an open source developement which you can modify by yourself because is a free license Software. This so called open software programs like Gimp or Inkscale or Blender what you to make your work as much as individual as is can be. This liberates your work and makes it easier for you to give your piece of work your own style. Generally, open source refers to a computer program in which the source code is available to the general public for use and/or modification from its original design
You have the Freedom to…
- to run the program as you wish for any purpose
- to study how the program works and change it so it does your computing as you wish access tot he source code is a precondition for this
- to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbour
- to distribute copies of your modified versions to others. By ding this you can give the whole community a chance to benefit from your changes. Access to the source code is a precondition for this


On the other side there are the proprietary license software like Adobe Photoshop , InDesign and Illustrater. They reserve all their freedoms and rights oft he software for their own. That means you’re not able to modify the software like in the OpenSource softwares.

There are several open source softwares. The most common ones are:

GIMP → Image Manipulation Program
It is a free open source raster graphics editor

INKSCAPE→ Vector graphic software.
It can create or edit vector graphics such as illustrations, diagrams, line arts, charts, logos and complex paintings.

SCRIBUS → Desktop Publishing Application
Scribus is designed for layout, typesetting, and to prepare files for professional-quality image-setting equipment.

If you google “Libre Graphics” the first link you’ll see is about the Libre Graphics Meeting. The LGM is an event where people who share the Philosophy of open source come together and talk about how Open Sources can be improved. The LGM aims to bring these people together in the cause of creating high quality free graphics applications.
The LGM held yearly since 2006.

The Libre Graphics Research Unit

The Libre Graphics Research Unit is a traveling lab where new ideas for creative tools are developed. Its diverse activities range from the practical to the theoretical via writing, research meetings, experimental prototyping, conferences and workshops. The Research Unit is an initiative of four European media-labs actively engaged in Free/Libre and Open Source Software and Free Culture. This cross-disciplinary project involves artists, designers and programmers and is developed in dialogue with the Libre Graphics community.
